StationScope

StationScope transforms the detection data collected by your BirdWeather™ station into an easy-to-read visual dashboard designed for iPad.

Overview

Designed for BirdWeather™ Enthusiasts

Instead of simply viewing individual detections, StationScope helps you understand the activity around your station. See how many birds and bats have been detected, discover which species are most active, explore activity patterns over time, and quickly review your latest detections — all from a single dashboard.

Connect the app to a BirdWeather™ station using its station URL, choose how much history you want to analyze, and StationScope handles the rest.

Whether you're monitoring a backyard station, maintaining a wildlife observation site, tracking seasonal migration, or simply curious about the birds and bats around you, StationScope makes your station's data easier to explore.

Rather than treating every detection as an isolated event, the application brings detections, species, scores, confidence levels, and activity patterns together into one visual workspace.

StationScope connects directly to BirdWeather™ station data and handles paginated detection retrieval automatically, allowing the application to work with stations containing substantial detection histories.

Your BirdWeather™ station collects the observations. StationScope helps you explore them.

Features

Understand the activity around your station.

At-a-Glance Station Dashboard

  • Total detections
  • Bird detections
  • Bat detections
  • Total species detected
  • Bird and bat species counts
  • Latest detection
  • Detection score and confidence
  • Last station update
  • Current analysis window
  • Multiple Station Support
  • Station Location
  • Refresh Status Indicator
  • Selectable Refresh Intervals
  • New Species Detections (identified with a green bar)

Bird & Bat Detection Support

Analyze both bird and bat detections from compatible BirdWeather™ stations. Quickly filter the dashboard between bird and bat activity to focus on the wildlife you're interested in.

Play back audio tuned for Birds and Bats with Spectrogram and Waveform visualizations. Bat audio also includes an Ultrasonic Visualization for inspecting high-frequency calls.

Interactive Activity Analysis

See when wildlife is most active around your station with a visual activity chart.

Choose between two ways of viewing activity:

  • Data Range — analyzes detections across your selected historical period.
  • Time Range — focuses on activity throughout the 24-hour day.
  • Month Range — groups detections by calendar month for longer-term and seasonal analysis.
  • Adjust the retrieval period to examine anything from recent activity to longer-term detection patterns.

Species Summary

See the species detected by your station along with useful statistics for each species, including:

Select a species to filter the dashboard and concentrate on its activity.

  • Detection count
  • Recent detection activity
  • Detection score information
  • Species imagery when available
  • Sort by Count, Time, or Name in ascending (ASC) or descending (DESC) order

Recent Detections

Review your station's latest detections in chronological order.

Each detection provides quick access to information such as:

Select any detection for a more detailed view.

  • Species
  • Detection time
  • Detection score
  • Confidence
  • Species image

Detailed Detection Information

Dig deeper into individual detections with a dedicated species detail view showing:

  • Species information and imagery
  • Detection count
  • Confidence
  • Detection score
  • Individual detection timestamps
  • Audio playback for bird and bat detections

Flexible Analysis Window

You're not limited to a fixed snapshot of station activity. Configure how many days of BirdWeather™ data the application retrieves and use that same data throughout the dashboard, charts, species summaries, and detection lists.

Automatic Data Refresh

Keep your dashboard current without repeatedly reloading it yourself. Configure the refresh interval and StationScope automatically checks for updated station data while the application is running.

Interactive Filtering

Dashboard statistics aren't just informational.

Select Bird Species or Bat Species directly from the dashboard to filter activity, or select an individual species from the Species Summary to examine its detections and activity pattern.

Filters update the dashboard metrics, activity graph, species information, and recent detections together.

Adaptive iPad Interface

StationScope is designed specifically around an information-rich iPad experience, with layouts that adapt between portrait and landscape orientations.

The interface uses a modern visual dashboard with clear metric cards, activity visualization, species imagery, and streamlined detail views to keep large amounts of detection information understandable at a glance.

Planned enhancements

  • Station Statistics & Sensor Data — Add station telemetry and sensor information from BirdWeather™, including system readings and available sensor data.
  • Activity Graph Time Selection — Tap a time interval in the bar or line graph to filter dashboard species and detections, while keeping the full graph available to select another interval.
  • Faster Historical Data Loading — Load missing data in concurrent five-day windows to reduce initial loading times for 30-day and calendar-month views, while retaining completed downloads if another request fails.
  • Species Name Search — Find species by typing any part of their common name, with results updating as you type regardless of capitalization.
  • Species Detection History Report — View a month-by-month species report across all locally cached detections, independent of the dashboard's selected retrieval period.
  • Playback Noise Reduction — Add optional Off, Light, Moderate, and Strong noise-reduction controls with separate presets for bird and bat recordings, preserving the original audio for graph analysis.
  • Clearer Ultrasonic Bat Calls — Reduce background noise and improve call contrast in the Ultrasonic graph using original high-resolution audio, with frequency limits matched to each recording's sample rate.
